Pop Matters Loves What Hearts Debut LP!
"Portland’s What Hearts is the brainchild of one Julie Vitells, a singer-songwriter who wrote the 10 songs that appear on her band’s first full-length album, which is self-titled, in a converted schoolbus named Marjorie. It turns out that it must be a magic schoolbus (like the kids’ cartoon show), because the songs that appear on What Hearts are stunning and beautiful. They shimmer and shine, a kind of marriage between the Velvet Underground and the jangle rock of the Byrds." Read the full review over on Pop Matters!

What Hearts' Julie Vitells Interviewed On Willamette Week!
"Other songs on What Hearts are just as fascinating in riding the line between autobiography and fiction; revealing and teasing—Vitells’ songs are as clean and narrow as nature slides seen through a View-Master. (Her sister is a recurring character—but only sometimes, she explains, is her sister really her sister.) She does credit one strong influence, ex-Portland quartet A Weather, for shaping that songwriting style." Read on at Willamette Week!

"After drawing comparisons to Simon & Garfunkel, and for good reason, on the 2010 debut EP Songs for Marjorie, Portland's What Hearts have tweaked their formula a bit on their self-titled full-length debut for a sound that is more akin to a female-voiced collaboration between Bonnie Prince Billy and Belle & Sebastian." Head on over to OPB to listen.

What Hearts' Self-Titled LP Reviewed On Darling Dork!
"The instrumentation and lyrical content on Do It In the Day have a very folk feel, but the vocal harmonization and violin give a distinct country vibe. Julie’s vocal style, on the other hand, is very indie pop. These various elements play off one another surprisingly well, and blend together into a very natural sound." "Portland’s What Hearts will release their first full-length album, Do It In The Day, on May 15th.
